Istanbul Airport became busiest airport in Europe

Istanbul Airport has been named the busiest airport in Europe, with an average of 1,482 daily flights between April 21-27, according to the European Aviation Report by the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation (EUROCONTROL) for the period in question.

According to the data, Istanbul Airport is followed by Amsterdam Schiphol with 1,419 daily flights, London Heathrow with 1,357 flights, Paris Charles de Gaulle with 1,344 flights and Frankfurt airports with 1,314 flights.

Istanbul Airport has become the busiest cargo hub in Europe, handling 1.97 million tonnes of cargo in 2024.

Istanbul Airport opened on October 29, 2018, replacing the closed Ataturk Airport. Once construction is completed in 2025, it will have six runways and be able to handle around 150 million passengers per year.
