Greece takes UN Security Council presidency for May

The presidency of the UN Security Council passed to Athens in May, Greek media reported on Friday.

The country’s permanent representative to the UN Evangelos Sekeris presented the agenda for the current month at a briefing at the world organisation’s headquarters in New York.

According to him, Greece will initiate two major high-level events in May.

“An open debate on “Strengthening maritime security through international cooperation for global stability” will be held on May 20. The discussion will be chaired by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, with UN Secretary-General António Guterres as the main speaker. The second main event will take place on May 22 and will be dedicated to the annual debate on the protection of civilians in armed conflict. Greece is organising this event at the ministerial level. The debate will be chaired by Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Hatzis,” the Permanent Representative said.

Sekeris added that the UN Security Council’s agenda for May also includes such pressing issues as the situation in Lebanon, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Syria, Yemen and Libya. At the same time, a debate on the situation in the Middle East is scheduled for May 28.

On May 27, a vote will be held to elect a new judge to the International Court of Justice. At the end of the month, discussions are also planned on the extension of sanctions against South Sudan and consultations on North Korea.
