US President Donald Trump joked this week, “I’d like to be pope,” after attending Pope Francis’ funeral in Rome.
On Saturday, the White House shared an AI-generated image of Trump dressed as the Catholic Church’s leader. Trump first posted the image on Truth Social. It shows him in full papal robes, wearing a large crucifix and seated on the papal coronation chair. He is pointing with his index finger.
Church prepares to choose new Pope
The Catholic Church is preparing to select a new pope following Pope Francis’ death earlier this month. Cardinals will begin the voting process on 7 May inside the Sistine Chapel.
Trump travelled to Rome last week for the funeral, marking his first international trip since starting his second term as US president.
Many have described Pope Francis as Trump’s opposite—a powerful figure who lived simply, helped the poor, and avoided displays of wealth. Meanwhile, some far-right groups are trying to influence the upcoming conclave.
When asked who should replace Francis, Trump said, “I have no preference,” before repeating his joke: “I’d like to be pope.” He added, “I must say, we have a cardinal from New York who’s very good.”
Reactions to the image
The AI-generated picture received mixed responses online. Some users found it amusing, while others called it disrespectful, especially so soon after Pope Francis’ death.
“I love Trump but I find his Pope meme disrespectful and insulting,” wrote a user named Oklahoma Gamgee on X. “God will not be mocked. Not a wise decision.”
