Tourists jailed after deadly assault in Egypt

Two Arab-Israeli tourists have received five-year prison sentences in Egypt. They were found guilty of attacking hotel staff in Taba, a Red Sea resort town, resulting in one death.

The incident happened in August during a dispute over drinks at the hotel. The tourists claimed their booking included beverages. However, the hotel management disagreed. The argument quickly escalated into violence.

The two men allegedly used wooden and metal sticks to assault staff members. They also damaged property, smashing glass doors and furniture. One hotel worker died from the injuries. Two others suffered serious harm. Property damage was estimated at 35,000 Egyptian pounds (around $1,130).

Police arrested the tourists soon after the incident. Egypt’s top prosecutor ordered their detention and trial in September. A South Sinai court delivered the sentence on Saturday.

The case drew strong reactions on social media. Many in Egypt expressed concern over tourist behaviour. The incident also sparked wider discussions about Egypt’s efforts to manage tourism and regional relations.

Taba remains a popular destination for Israeli visitors. It serves as a key border crossing and holiday spot.

The timing of the case coincides with increased regional tension. The ongoing conflict in Gaza has led to significant civilian casualties and limited access to humanitarian aid.

Officials in Israel have not issued public statements. The families of the defendants have also remained silent. However, some Israeli media reports note that most Israeli tourists experience warm hospitality in Egypt.
