Drone strikes rock Port Sudan

Drone strikes by rebels from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) hit an airport and military base in Port Sudan on the third day of an assault on the city, Sudanese airport officials said on Tuesday.

One drone struck the civilian section of Port Sudan airport.” All flights were suspended.

Another drone struck an army base in the city centre, a Sudanese military source said. Eyewitnesses reported that a nearby hotel was damaged. Both sites are located near the residence of Sudanese leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. A third drone struck a fuel depot.

Earlier, the RSF launched drone strikes on targets near Port Sudan airport, including an aircraft carrying ammunition.

On May 5, the Sudanese Armed Forces attacked an airport controlled by RSF rebels in the town of Nyala in South Darfur state.

The Sudanese army accuses the RSF of attempting to undermine key infrastructure in the eastern region, which is considered relatively safe amid the ongoing conflict in the country. Port Sudan, located on the Red Sea coast, is Sudan’s main maritime and air hub, through which humanitarian supplies and evacuation flights pass.

The civil war in Sudan between the RSF and the regular army began in April, 2023. More than 20,000 people have been killed, more than 14 million have been displaced, and 25 million are in urgent need of assistance.
