The Palestinian authorities are waiting and hoping that calm will be restored in the Gaza Strip and that a ceasefire agreement will be reached with Israel. The humanitarian situation is also acute due to Israeli shelling, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said during talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
“We are currently experiencing very difficult conditions related to the military situation and the conclusion of a ceasefire. This applies to both the West Bank and Gaza. We want a ceasefire. We want a solution to humanitarian issues,” Abbas stressed.
Meanwhile, Israeli strikes on Saturday night killed 10 people, mostly women and children, in the Gaza Strip.
Two strikes hit tents in the southern town of Khan Younis, killing two children and their parents. According to Nasser Hospital, where the bodies of all the victims were taken, another strike killed a child and a man riding a bicycle.
Israel has been blockading Gaza for more than 10 weeks, preventing any supplies from entering the sector, including food, medicine and materials for building temporary shelters. According to Israel, this measure is a pressure tactic aimed at forcing Hamas to release hostages. Israel resumed its offensive in March, breaking a ceasefire that had allowed more than 30 hostages to be released.
According to humanitarian organisations, food supplies are running out and people are starving.
More than 52,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed in the Israeli offensive. The offensive has destroyed vast areas and forced about 90% of Gaza’s 2 million residents to flee their homes.
