Serbia committed to EU membership despite Moscow visit, Vučić says

President Aleksandar Vučić said on Tuesday that Serbia is committed to becoming an EU member state, despite the fact that he met with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Moscow last week to commemorate Victory Day on 9 May, according to Euractiv.

Standing alongside European Council President António Costa in Belgrade, Vučić rejected suggestions that his close ties with Russia and Serbia’s desire to join the EU contradict each other.

The political will of Serbia is unequivocal for Serbia to be on the European path, to speed up its integration and to do its job.

Earlier in May, European officials, including Vice-President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas, urged Vučić not to participate in Russia’s Victory Day parade on 9 May or he would face “consequences.”

Costa stated on Tuesday that the Serbian leader had assured him that “EU integration remains a top priority” for both him and the country’s government. On the same day, Vučić insisted that Serbia “supports the territorial integrity of all countries in the world, including Ukraine.”
