Armed clashes resumed in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, between forces loyal to the Government of National Accord and the Stability Support Apparatus (SSA).
The fighting broke out after the elimination of Abdel Ghani al-Kikli, head of the SSA under the Libyan Presidential Council. He was killed at the headquarters of the 444th Brigade of the Tripoli Military District, after which the brigade allegedly received orders to attack the SSA headquarters and launched an offensive.
SSA forces were deployed at the entrances to the city, including on the road to Mitiga International Airport and to their headquarters. Eyewitnesses reported the movement of a military convoy of security forces and judicial police towards Mitiga.
Fierce clashes in the Libyan capital began on the evening of May 12. The Interior Ministry reported that clashes were taking place in the city between the 44th Combat Brigade, supported by the Misrata Brigade, and the Security and Stability Apparatus.
Mitiga International Airport, located in Tripoli, has temporarily suspended operations, with scheduled flights diverted to the airport in the city of Misrata.
