14 injured as car drives into crowd outside FC Barcelona-Espanyol match

The match against Espanyol and Barcelona had a sad omen: a massive traffic accident occurred in the vicinity of the stadium shortly before the start of the match on Thursday, Spanish media reported.

According to the Emergency Medical Service (SEM), which sent ten ambulance crews to the scene, 14 people were injured, four of them seriously, and ten suffered minor injuries. Images from the scene indicate the seriousness of the accident, but fortunately, the situation was brought under control and the driver of the vehicle was detained.

The Mossos d’Esquadra police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident and are gathering all the information, but have already stated that it was an accident and that the driver did not intend to hit anyone. This is the version being investigated.

According to them, the driver, who was behind the wheel of a white Peugeot 208 and is aged between 45 and 55, lost control of the car. She accidentally hit a girl, which caused several people to become angry and start shouting at her and throwing whatever they could find at the car. Then, in a panic, the woman behind the wheel confused the accelerator with the brake and drove into the crowd.

The investigation team from Cornelia, which took over the case, tested the driver, who was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and she is currently in custody awaiting questioning and transfer to court.
