Pope Leo XIV calls for unity and peace in inaugural mass

Pope Leo XIV called for unity within the Catholic Church during his inaugural Mass in St. Peter’s Square. Around 150,000 pilgrims, along with world leaders and dignitaries, attended the event.

The 69-year-old Augustinian missionary began his papacy with a ride in the popemobile. This traditional gesture symbolises the global reach and media presence of the papacy. As he waved to the crowd, Pope Leo smiled, greeting the thousands gathered in the square.

During the Mass, Pope Leo became visibly moved as the pallium and the Fisherman’s Ring were placed on him. He looked at the ring before clasping his hands in prayer, reflecting on the significance of these symbols.

A Call for Unity and Peace

In his homily, Pope Leo stressed the importance of unity in the Church. He expressed his hope that the Church would serve as a force for peace. “I hope our primary goal will be a united Church, a sign of communion that helps to reconcile the world,” he said. “In our time, we still face too much discord, violence, and prejudice, along with an economic system that exploits resources and neglects the poor.”

Pope Leo’s message for unity resonated strongly, especially in light of the ongoing divisions within the Catholic Church. The US delegation, led by Vice President JD Vance, attended to honour the new Pope. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and several members of Congress also joined the service.

“Let us build a Church founded on God’s love,” Pope Leo urged. “A Church that embraces the world, spreads the Gospel, and becomes a force for peace and unity.”

At the end of the Mass, Pope Leo prayed for a “just and lasting peace” in Ukraine. He also offered prayers for the people of Gaza, particularly for those suffering from hunger and hardship. Unlike his predecessor, Pope Leo did not mention the hostages taken by Hamas in southern Israel on 7th October 2023.

After the Mass, Pope Leo greeted delegates in the basilica. On Sunday, he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Peruvian President Dina Boluarte.
