Tens of thousands in Netherlands protest against Gaza war

Tens of thousands of protesters flooded The Hague on Sunday, asking the Dutch government to adopt a tougher attitude to Israel’s war on Gaza.

Mobilisation organiser Oxfam Novib said the march involved about 100,000 protesters, most dressed in red, to express their desire to join the “red line” in Israel’s siege in Gaza, where medicine and fuel supplies have been cut off.

The march also marched outside a building based at the International Court of Justice, which is hearing an appeal by South Africa, which accuses Israel of genocide and last year ordered Israel to end its military assault on the southern Gaza town of Rafah.

Israel rejects the genocide charges as baseless and has argued in court that its operations in Gaza are self-equipping and targeting Hamas fighters who attacked Israel on October 7.

Oxfam Novib accuses the Dutch government of ignoring the commitment of war crimes from Israel to Gaza and has called on protesters to ask for a tougher line.

Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp said earlier this month that the EU wanted to renegotiate co-operation agreements with Israel.
