North Korea detains shipyard officials over failed destroyer launch

North Korean authorities have arrested three senior shipyard officials after a failed launch of a naval destroyer. Leader Kim Jong Un blamed the incident on what he called criminal negligence, according to state media on Sunday.

The 5,000-ton warship was damaged on Wednesday when a support cradle at the stern broke loose during a launch ceremony in Chongjin, in the northeast. Kim attended the event. Satellite images showed the ship tipped to one side, partly submerged, and covered with blue sheets.

Setback for North Korea’s Naval plans

This destroyer is only the second of its kind in North Korea. The failed launch marks a setback for Kim’s plans to strengthen the navy. He aims to counter what he sees as growing military pressure from the United States and its allies.

North Korea launched its first destroyer, also 5,000 tons, just last month with great publicity. State media described it as the country’s largest and most advanced warship. Officials claimed it can carry several weapons, including nuclear missiles.

Arrests and investigations underway

Authorities arrested the shipyard’s chief engineer, the head of the hull construction team, and a deputy manager for administrative affairs. The state-run Korean Central News Agency said these individuals were responsible for the launch failure. Officials also summoned the shipyard manager, Hong Kil Ho, for questioning.

Kim blamed the failure on what he described as carelessness, poor responsibility, and unscientific practices. North Korea’s Central Military Commission supported his view. It stated that those involved must be held accountable.

Officials denied that the vessel suffered serious damage. They reported scratches on the starboard hull and some seawater entering the stern section. On Friday, North Korea estimated that repairs would take about 10 days. However, outside experts believe the damage may be worse than reported.
