US won’t let Iran enrich uranium under nuclear deal, Trump says

The White House will not allow Tehran to enrich uranium under a potential agreement on its nuclear programme, US President Donald Trump said on Monday.

“The AUTOPEN should have stopped Iran a long time ago from “enriching.” Under our potential Agreement — WE WILL NOT ALLOW ANY ENRICHMENT OF URANIUM!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social page.

Earlier, the Axios reported that the United States’ proposals to Iran on ways to resolve differences over its nuclear developments provide for Tehran to continue enriching uranium, contrary to public statements by US officials on the matter. According to the portal, the proposals sent by Washington to Tehran on May 30 suggest that Iran will be able to engage in “limited low-level uranium enrichment for a period to be determined.”

Representatives of Iran and the US held the fifth round of talks on Iran’s nuclear programme in Rome on May 23. Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi, who is mediating between the sides, reported that “certain but not final progress” had been made.

After the consultations, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that Tehran and Washington hope to achieve positive results in one or two more meetings.

At the end of May, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Tehran must abandon its desire to obtain nuclear weapons, otherwise it could lead to war. Earlier, Trump said that the US and Iran were close to concluding a deal on the nuclear programme.
