A domestic zebra named Ed became a social media star in the United States after escaping from its new owners in Tennessee on May 31 and running through residential streets and highways. After more than a week on the run, Ed was caught and returned home by helicopter.
The zebra was found in a pasture on June 8. Local sheriff’s office staff, the highway patrol and the Tennessee Department of Wildlife Resources joined forces to return him home.
Ed was transported in a sitting position in a special net attached to the helicopter. Footage of the operation shows the fugitive’s legs sticking out of the restraints.
The zebra was delivered to its new owner as a pet on May 30, and the next day, the owner of the exotic pet contacted law enforcement about its disappearance.
Ed’s spontaneous vacation sparked a series of memes on the internet, including ones where he was placed in strange locations where he might have fled, including southern establishments such as Waffle House.
In Tennessee, it is legal to keep zebras as pets.
