A fatal shooting at Dreierschützengasse secondary school in Graz, Austria, claimed several lives, with local authorities confirming multiple fatalities, Euractiv reported.
The Austrian Interior Ministry acknowledged the deaths but declined to specify the exact number of victims.
According to police reports, the incident began shortly after 10:00 AM local time, triggering a large-scale emergency operation. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as students fled the building. Austrian public broadcaster ÖRF cited police sources indicating the suspected perpetrator—a student at the school—is believed to have taken his own life.
Graz Mayor Elke Kahr later confirmed this detail to Austrian media, stating teachers and students were among the casualties.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed solidarity on social media:
The news from Graz hits home. My thoughts are with the victims, their families and friends.
The timing carries grim resonance, as the attack occurred days before the tenth anniversary of Graz’s June 2015 shooting that killed three people. The tragedy reignites debates about Austria’s gun culture, where the 2018 Small Arms Survey recorded nearly 30 firearms per 100 citizens, more than double neighbouring Czechia and Hungary’s rates.
