Nintendo states it sold more than 3.5 million units of its new Switch 2 gaming consoles within the first four days following its release, setting a company record, according to AP News.
In a Wednesday announcement, the Japanese gaming firm declared this marks the “highest global sales level” for any hardware it has sold within that initial timeframe. The Switch 2 officially launched on 5 June.
Eager fans of the console’s eight-year-old predecessor had anticipated an upgrade for years. Crowds of gamers formed lengthy queues outside stores worldwide for the Switch 2’s release last week.
The surge followed a chaotic rush for preorders less than two months prior, which sold out rapidly. The 3.5 million units sold encompass the Nintendo Switch 2’s Mario Kart World Bundle, alongside the Japanese-language and multi-language systems sold in Japan.
Nintendo is relying on the Switch 2 to revitalise declining sales. Beyond featuring a larger screen and new games, the console incorporates enhanced social functionalities designed to attract new players to online gaming. The company projected sales of 15 million Switch 2 consoles for the fiscal year ending March 2026.
Notably, the Switch 2’s baseline price of $449.99 represents a significant increase over the original Switch’s $299 price tag. While the device’s novel features contribute substantially to this rise, experts have previously noted that new tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump also contributed to the higher cost.
