Pope Leo XIV announced that the canonisation of Italian teenager Carlo Acutis, who died of leukaemia in 2006, will take place on September 7. He will become the first saint of the 21st century.
Acutis died at the age of 15. He spread knowledge about the Catholic faith on the internet, creating a website where he published reports of miracles.
The teenager was popular among young followers of the church. He is often depicted wearing jeans and sneakers, making him a recognisable figure for a new generation of Catholics. The ceremony will take place in St. Peter’s Square. Along with Carlo Acutis, Pier Giorgio Frassatti, who died in 1925 at the age of 24, will also be canonised.
