Trump’s 79th birthday parade sparks ‘No Kings’ protests across US

President Donald Trump will oversee a military parade at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC, on Saturday, celebrating both his 79th birthday and the US Army’s 250th anniversary. Meanwhile, protests under the “No Kings” banner are planned in cities across the country, highlighting political divisions over Trump’s second term.

Parade draws criticism for cost and scale

The parade will feature tanks, military bands, flyovers, and more than 6,000 troops. Originally planned as a military celebration, the event recently expanded to include these elements at the president’s request. Critics have questioned the estimated $45 million cost and raised concerns about damage to city roads. In response, the Army placed metal plates along the route to protect infrastructure.

Despite backlash, Trump expressed enthusiasm on social media. He dismissed concerns about the weather and cost, calling it a “great day” regardless of the conditions. The parade will conclude with a concert, fireworks, and a swearing-in ceremony for new troops.

Use of military at home raises legal and ethical questions

In addition to the parade, Trump ordered US Marines and National Guard units to provide security at immigration protests in Los Angeles. This marks the first time in 60 years that a president has deployed National Guard troops within a state without the governor’s approval. California’s Governor Gavin Newsom has filed a lawsuit to challenge the decision.

Earlier in the week, Trump appeared at Fort Bragg, where uniformed troops stood behind him during a politically charged speech. Some cheered and booed as he criticised his predecessor, Joe Biden. A temporary merchandise stall selling Trump-themed items nearby added to concerns about the military’s political neutrality. US Department of Defense policy prohibits troops from engaging in political activity while in uniform.

Nationwide protests and mixed public opinion

While protests are expected in hundreds of cities, none are currently planned in Washington, DC. Organisers of the “No Kings” demonstrations say they are responding to what they see as a show of personal vanity tied to Trump’s birthday and Flag Day. Officials in the capital have reported no credible security threats.

A recent poll by the Associated Press-NORC Centre found that 60% of Americans believe the parade is not a good use of public funds. Among those with no strong opinion on the event, a majority still objected to the cost.

Final preparations and parade details

The day-long event is expected to draw as many as 200,000 spectators. It will begin at 9:30am EDT with fitness displays, military demonstrations, and live music. The main parade starts at 6:30pm EDT, with aircraft flyovers, historical military units, and armoured vehicles. Planners have kept the heaviest equipment off key bridges to avoid damage.

Weather may still affect the schedule. Officials say the event will continue rain or shine, although lightning could delay proceedings and force a temporary evacuation of the National Mall.
