European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has put an end to speculation that she would fight for the leadership of the Nationalist Party following the resignation of its leader earlier this week.
In a sincere and resolute statement released today, Metsola confirmed that she will not be standing for the position, insisting that she must remain fully focused on her role as President of the European Parliament.
Metsola said that while leading the Nationalist Party and serving as Prime Minister of Malta would be the greatest honour for any politician, this was not a matter of personal ambition but of responsibility. She spoke of the global challenges facing Europe and Malta, including military tensions, economic uncertainty and critical decisions on investment and employment, stressing that now is not the time to divide attention.
The National Party MEP pledged her full support for whoever takes over as leader of the National Party and promised to do everything she can to help strengthen the party, win the next general election and “save our country.”
Metsola acknowledged that her decision may be criticised or manipulated by many, including political opponents, but said she would continue to fight to show the best that Malta has to offer. “I will always stand by our party and our country, as I have always done since my youth,” she said.
