Poland may reinstate border controls with Lithuania, Germany

Poland may establish border controls with Germany and Lithuania if the situation with illegal migration worsens, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said at a press conference on Monday.

According to the information, he has already sent a letter to the German government and Chancellor Friedrich Merz with this initiative.

“We have indicated to the German side that if cases of illegal migration that we consider questionable are repeated, we will be forced to restore effective controls on the Polish-German border on the Polish side,” Polsat TV quoted him as saying.

According to the prime minister, if the resumption of intensive border checks did not have negative consequences, he “would not hesitate for a minute.”

“These decisions must be extremely precise and must not affect too large a group of Polish citizens…. This also applies to the possible recognition of controls on the Lithuanian border,” he said.

On June 11, Tusk said that the government could introduce partial controls on the border with Germany as early as this summer if the number of migrants crossing the border continues to grow.

On September 16, 2024, Germany introduced temporary controls at all land borders to combat illegal migration and protect against internal security threats related to terrorism and crime. Poland and other countries criticised Berlin’s move, calling it unfriendly.
