Iran warns of expelling EU from nuclear programme talks

Iran has criticised the European Union’s top diplomat for calling for an end to Tehran’s nuclear programme, warning that the EU countries and the United Kingdom could be excluded from any future talks if they insist on this position.

“If the European Union believes that Tehran’s nuclear programme must be halted, then the participation and role of the European Union and its member states, as well as the United Kingdom, in any future negotiations will be inappropriate and therefore meaningless,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote on X.

His statement was in response to a post by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, who called on Iran to resume talks aimed at ending its nuclear programme.

“Negotiations on ending Iran’s nuclear programme must resume as soon as possible. Co-operation with the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) must resume,” the head of European diplomacy stressed.

Kallas also assured Araghchi that the European Union is ready to facilitate the resumption of co-operation between the Islamic Republic and the agency. Earlier, Araghchi said that Iran would resume negotiations with the United States on the nuclear deal after Washington gave guarantees that it would not attack the republic during the talks. He added that scientific knowledge and uranium enrichment technology cannot be destroyed by bombing, and that Tehran would therefore be able to restore what it has lost in this area.

On Monday, the foreign ministers of the G7 countries expressed their support for a ceasefire between Israel and Iran and called for the resumption of negotiations on the nuclear deal.
