Two Ukrainian girls found dead in Italy in fortnight

Mariia Buhaiova, a Ukrainian student who went missing in Italy since last Friday, was found dead several days after a search, according to Il Messaggero.

The Ukrainian student disappeared on July 4 in the southern Italian region of Apulia, where she was doing an internship at a tourist complex on the Adriatic coast. The girl’s body was found in an open area 1 km from the complex.

According to the main version of the investigation, Mariia hanged herself using a sheet, her mobile phone, passport and a short message to her relatives were left in the room. Video camera recordings show that the student left alone and headed for the beach.

The Brindisi prosecutor’s office has classified the case as suicide and is questioning the management of the complex, colleagues and project participants, analysing correspondence and financial transactions. Forensic doctors plan to limit themselves to an external examination, and will decide on a possible autopsy after reviewing the investigation materials.

On June 27, a similar tragedy occurred in Bergamo involving a young Ukrainian girl living in Italy. A 14-year-old girl, who was supposed to take a secondary school exam that day, committed suicide by jumping from the roof of a warehouse in an abandoned industrial area. Before doing so, she sent a message to her uncle: “You will never find me again. I love you all.”
