South Korea’s Yoon returns to jail as martial law probe accelerates

A Seoul court has remanded former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol into custody for a second time, Korean media reported on Thursday.

The South Korean special prosecutor’s office, which is investigating last year’s imposition of martial law, requested an arrest warrant for Yoon on July 6.

The special prosecutor sought the warrant on five key charges. These include the former president’s alleged violation of the rights of cabinet members prior to the imposition of martial law. He was also accused of falsifying documents and spreading false information about martial law. The defence rejected the charges.

The judge decided to grant the request for an arrest warrant, explaining that the former president could destroy evidence in the case.

Yoon was taken to a detention centre in Seoul, where he will await further court decisions. In December 2024, Yoon declared martial law in the country, after which the government impeached him. The former president was accused of organising a rebellion and was arrested in January.

In March, a Seoul court released Yoon from custody but continued to hear the case of insurrection. The Constitutional Court then ruled that the president’s December decision was illegal, upholding his impeachment.
