The FBI has launched a criminal investigation into former CIA Director John Brennan and former FBI Director James Comey, US media reported on Thursday, citing the US Department of Justice.
The case is related to possible violations committed during the investigation into Donald Trump’s alleged ties to Russia and Moscow’s interference in the 2016 presidential election. Investigators intend to check whether Brennan and Comey gave false testimony.
In June, the CIA published a report stating that the US intelligence community’s report on Russian interference in the 2016 election was prepared with procedural violations and may have been politically motivated. The document was compiled at the request of current CIA Director John Ratcliffe.
Following the publication, Ratcliffe stated on social media that the election report had been compiled as part of a corrupt process marked by political bias, in which Brennan and Comey were involved, in his opinion.
Interrogation of former FBI chief
This May, former FBI Director James Comey was questioned at the Secret Service office in Washington after posting on social media what the US authorities considered a threat to President Donald Trump.
The reason for the investigation was a photo showing shells arranged on the sand to form the numbers 8647147.
The combination caused a storm in the US: “86” is sometimes interpreted in American slang as “eliminate,” while “47” corresponds to Trump’s serial number as president of the country. Later, the son of the head of state, Donald Trump Jr., posted a screenshot of the controversial post and claimed that Comey was “alling for the murder of his father.”
Comey explained that he was unaware of such interpretations and did not intend any hidden meaning in the post.
