Fourteen dead as floods and landslides sweep South Korea

Heavy rain battered South Korea for five days, killing 14 people and leaving 12 missing, the government said.

On Sunday, heavy rain caused a house to collapse, killing one person. Floodwaters swept away another person in Gapyeong, a town north-east of Seoul, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety reported.

On Saturday, heavy rain triggered landslides, house collapses, and flash floods in the southern town of Sancheong. Rescue teams found eight dead and searched for six missing.

Rescuers are still looking for six people in Gapyeong and the southern city of Gwangju.

Earlier last week, emergency crews recovered three bodies from a submerged car. Another person died when soil and concrete buried their car after a retaining wall collapsed near an overpass in Osan, south of Seoul.

By 9am local time on Sunday, about 3,840 people had evacuated their homes, the ministry said.

Officials said the rain stopped in most parts of South Korea. They lifted heavy rain alerts nationwide.

Since Wednesday, southern areas have received between 24 and 31 inches of rain, the ministry added.
