Jaish al-Adl attack on Iran courthouse leaves five dead in Zahedan

An armed group attacked a courthouse in Iran’s southeast on Tuesday, killing five people and injuring 13 others.

The attack took place in Zahedan, the capital of Sistan-Baluchestan province. The Sunni militant group Jaish al-Adl claimed responsibility in a statement shared on Telegram.

Iranian state media reported that three attackers died during clashes with security forces. A senior police official confirmed the deaths and added that a mother and child were among the victims. The attackers reportedly threw a hand grenade into the building.

The human rights group HAALVSH, citing eyewitnesses, said the attackers stormed the judges’ chambers. Several judiciary staff and security personnel were among the casualties.

Sistan-Baluchestan borders Pakistan and Afghanistan. It is home to Iran’s Sunni Muslim Baluch minority, who have long raised concerns about economic and political discrimination.

The province has seen repeated clashes between security forces and armed groups. These groups often demand more rights and autonomy. Iranian authorities accuse some of them of links to foreign powers and involvement in smuggling and armed unrest.
