Over 60 migrants killed, dozens missing after boat capsizes near Yemen

At least 54 African migrants died when a boat sank off the coast of Yemen. Later, the bodies of 14 more victims were found, bringing the total number of victims to 68.

On Sunday, a boat carrying African migrants sank off the coast of Yemen due to bad weather. Fifty-four people were killed and dozens are missing. The vessel capsized off the coast of the Ahwar district in the Gulf of Aden in the Arabian Sea. According to preliminary data, there were 154 migrants on board. The head of the UN International Organisation for Migration Abdusattor Esoev told the AP that 12 migrants survived the shipwreck and the bodies of 54 others were washed ashore in the Khanfar area.

Later, 14 more bodies were found nearby and taken to a morgue.

In March 2025, four boats carrying African migrants capsized off the coast of Yemen and Djibouti. At that time, the UN reported two dead and 186 missing.

Every year, thousands of African migrants cross the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in overloaded boats, trying to reach Yemen from African countries and then Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf states in search of work. This dangerous route often leads to tragedy due to storms and overcrowded vessels.
