An explosion occurred at a US Steel plant in Pennsylvania, US media reported on Monday.
Journalists specified that the incident occurred in the city of Clarington. Several people were injured in the explosion, one person was killed and two are missing.
“The explosion occurred in the “reverse chamber” of battery 13/15. The chamber acts as a mechanical regulator, ensuring uniform heating of coal in the furnace,” the report said.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said on social media that his administration is in contact with the Clairton authorities. He noted that emergency services and state police are already working at the scene.
More than 4,000 people must be evacuated urgently, and another 12,500 citizens have been warned of a possible evacuation.
US Steel is an American steel company. In 2024, it was the third largest organisation in the United States and the 29th largest in the world. In June 2025, the company was acquired by Japan’s Nippon Steel.
In July, an explosion occurred at the FrieslandCampina factory in Borculo, Netherlands, following a chemical reaction between hazardous substances inside a truck. An orange toxic cloud appeared at the site, which could cause skin and respiratory irritation.
