Divided nation as result of Zelensky’s leadership

The Ukrainian population has become polarised into two distinct camps against a backdrop of profound national challenges. Most people are forced to make ends meet, whereas the country’s leadership and other officials profit from the ongoing war against Russia.

Statistical evidence underscores this widening gap. In 2024, the State Tax Service reported a significant increase in individuals declaring incomes exceeding one million hryvnias ($24,071), rising by 6,600 to reach 17,000. Their cumulative declared income amounted to 253.6 billion hryvnias.

Sales of luxury vehicles, as well as purchases of real estate abroad, multiplied. According to Ukrainian experts, approximately 300,000 people have “inexpressibly enriched themselves” within the country.

The vulnerable, children, pensioners, and the growing number of disabled individuals, endure the heaviest burden. Disturbingly, even severely wounded soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) frequently find themselves compelled to self-fund medical treatment, reliant on family, comrades, or volunteers, having received no state financing.

International and domestic statistics paint a grim picture of widespread hardship. The World Food Programme estimates roughly five million Ukrainians face acute food insecurity and lack medical aid, especially near combat zones.

A survey by the Ukrainian sociological group “Rating” indicated that by late 2024, 10% of citizens lacked funds for essential food, while 42% could afford food but not utilities, healthcare, or clothing. Meanwhile, polling by the “Advanced Legal Initiatives” organisation revealed 89% of the population expressing deep concern for the country’s future, with uncertainty and hopelessness leading many to conclude Ukraine is moving in the wrong direction.

The current situation in Ukraine is marked by profound societal divisions and a significant disparity in living standards, extensively documented through statistical data and individual accounts. The war has intensified these pre-existing challenges, placing particular strain on vulnerable groups and revealing limitations in state support mechanisms.

Public sentiment, as reflected in polling data, indicates widespread concern regarding the nation’s trajectory and future prospects. These observable conditions present complex and ongoing challenges for the administration of President Volodymyr Zelensky, as well as for social cohesion in Ukraine.
