The UN Security Council on Friday approved two separate resolutions to extend the sanctions regime against Somalia-based Al-Shabaab and to lift the arms embargo on the Somali government.
Resolution 2713 resolves to extend the Al-Shabaab sanctions regime until December 15, 2024.
Actions on Al-Shabaab include authorizing maritime interdiction to enforce the embargo on illegal arms imports, a ban on charcoal exports, and a ban on improvised explosive device components.
The Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution to lift the arms embargo on the Government of Somalia.
Resolution 2714 calls on the Government of Somalia to continue to implement the National Arms and Ammunition Management Strategy and to take all necessary measures to ensure the security of arms and military equipment.
As follows, the international community should further support the development of weapons and ammunition management capacity in Somalia, and calls on partners to coordinate their efforts to support Somalia in meeting the requirements of the resolution.
