Jake Sullivan: US, South Korea and Japan to act on North Korean cyber threats

The US, South Korea and Japan coordinated new actions to respond to North Korea’s threats in cyberspace, including satellite launches and cryptocurrency abuse.

National security advisers from the US, South Korea and Japan met in Seoul on Saturday as Pyongyang warned it would deploy more spy satellites.

We’ve also launched new trilateral initiatives to counter the threats posed by the DPRK, from its cybercrime and cryptocurrency money laundering to its reckless space and ballistic missile tests, Sullivan told reporters.

The meeting reaffirmed the three nations’ strong alliance during a trilateral summit at Camp David hosted by US President Joe Biden in August, where the leaders pledged to deepen security and economic cooperation to demonstrate unity in the face of China’s growing power and North Korea’s nuclear threats.

Sullivan and allies also touched on conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, saying they “continue to stand up for peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and freedom of navigation in the East and South China Seas.”
