Sudan’s armed group rejected sanctions imposed by the United States

The Sudanese Paramilitary Rapid Support Forces warned that the US move against the group would negatively affect Washington’s role as a mediator in ending the war, according to Yeni Şafak.

“RSF is welcoming any efforts to stop the war, through addressing its root causes which will lead to the stabilisation of the political troubles and the war.”

Sudan’s Paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF) on Thursday rejected US sanctions that were imposed on its leader Abdel-Rahim Dagalo during a five-month war.

The RSF claims that the sanctions are imposed unfairly and are based on false information. It also accuses the US of ignoring violations by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) during the war, such as the use of air strikes.

On Wednesday, the United States imposed sanctions against paramilitary commander Abdel-Rahim, brother of the RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti).

Sanctions were imposed for acts of violence that included “massacre of civilians, ethnically motivated killings and sexual violence.”

The US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control said that since the start of the war in April, both sides had failed to ensure a ceasefire. It also claimed that the RSF had committed a number of atrocities.

“The RSF and allied militias have been credibly accused of extensive human rights abuses in Darfur and elsewhere.”
