ISTAT also reported that the ratio of generations is also becoming increasingly unbalanced. For every child under the age of six, there are now more than five elderly people, while in 1971 there were 46 people over the age of 65 for every 100 young people under 15, today there are 193.

The birth rate has also plunged to a new all-time low of 393,000 in 2022, which is almost 7,000 fewer than in 2021 (-1.7 per cent), according to ISTAT.
