Maersk to send dozens of ships through Suez Canal

Denmark’s Maersk (MAERSKb.CO) announced on Wednesday it planned dozens of container ships to travel through the Suez Canal and Red Sea in the next few weeks after recently suspending sailings in the area due to attack risks.

Maersk, the container shipping giant, confirmed on December 24 that it was preparing to return to the Red Sea, citing the deployment of a US-led military operation to protect ships from attacks by Yemen’s Houthi militants.

Since December 19, the company re-routed ships around Africa via the Cape of Good Hope to avoid attacks, charging customers extra fees and extending by several weeks the time needed to transport goods from Asia to Europe and the east coast of North America.

The schedule is still subject to change depending on specific contingency plans, the company noted.
