The right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has nominated co-chairwoman Alice Weidel as a candidate for Chancellor of Germany on Saturday in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
The politician said during a press conference broadcast on the AfD’s social media page X:
“I would like to thank the party’s federal board, which today unanimously decided to nominate me.”
Weidel emphasised that she wanted to achieve peace in Ukraine, as well as to stop supplying weapons to Kyiv.
Earlier, the head of the CDU/CSU opposition bloc faction and candidate for the post of German chancellor, Friedrich Merz, criticised Olaf Scholz for playing on Germans’ fears of war in his election campaign.
On November 30, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for not playing “Russian roulette” with Germany’s security through Russia’s ultimatums threatening to supply the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) with Taurus missiles. He also promised Germans to keep Berlin from a direct military confrontation with Russia and to pursue a cautious course on further support for Ukraine.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government coalition collapsed last month. Scholz, who currently leads the country as part of a minority government, plans to call a vote of confidence in parliament on December 16. He is expected to lose, paving the way for elections on February 23.
