AFU commander-in-chief says mistakes by commanders affected “sustainability of defence”

The commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), Oleksandr Syrskyi, said that a number of commanders had revealed miscalculations, which affected the stability of the Ukrainian troops’ defence in certain areas.

The AFU commander-in-chief noted that the situation on the front is difficult. He said that Russia continues active actions in many directions, especially near Avdiivka and Zaporizhzhia. He wrote on his Facebook page:

The success of any battle depends on the quality of planning and how well the commander’s plan is implemented by his subordinates. This is primarily determined by the experience and skill of the commander and officers, the ability to correctly assess the situation and make relevant and timely decisions. During my visit, certain errors in the situational awareness and assessment of the enemy of some commanders were revealed, which directly affected the sustainability of defence on certain fronts.

Oleksandr Syrskyi, who took office as AFU commander-in-chief on 8 February, announced in the middle of the month that he was withdrawing troops from Avdiivka, which is 8km from Donetsk.

Syrskyi became head of Ukraine’s land forces in 2019. He says his priority is the morale of his troops, whom he is regularly pictured visiting at the front.
