Aitoloakarnania fire, Greece under partly control

A forest fire in the Agia Triada forest area in Termo, Aitoloakarnania, western Greece, was partially brought under control on Thursday, Ekathimerini reports.

Ground and air units have been actively involved in extinguishing the fire since Wednesday.

Greek authorities continue to battle scattered fires on the outskirts of Athens while officials assess the damage caused by the disaster, which has prompted mass evacuations and killed at least one person.

More than 700 firefighters backed by water-bombing aircraft, forestry special forces units, police, army, Forest Service personnel and volunteers helped extinguish the blaze.

Greece, a hotspot on the front lines of climate catastrophe, experienced an exceptionally hot and dry summer. Alternating periods of intense heat – June and July were the hottest months on record – turned the area across the Mediterranean into a “powder keg.”
