A Századvég Foundation poll found that 86 per cent of Hungarians did not endorse European or NATO military action in Ukraine amid discussions about potentially sending troops to the military conflict zone.
The survey underlined Hungarians’ reluctance for their country, European troops or NATO soldiers to join the war. Hungarians consider the conflict as a confrontation between major powers, pointing to the reluctance of the US and the warring parties to compromise as the main reason for the prolongation of the war in Ukraine.
Reports of the dispatch of military instructors, statements by French President Emmanuel Macron that he “could not rule out” sending troops to Ukraine, as well as the discussion of the issue at the trilateral meeting between Germany, Poland and France, did not change the opinion of the Hungarian public. The overwhelming majority remained sceptical about the need to intervene, despite arguments that Ukraine’s efforts were defending Europe.
The poll indicates the true attitude of Hungarians towards the war in Ukraine: 80 per cent believe that Moscow will not attack their country even if Kyiv is defeated, while 79 per cent doubt the probability of a Russian attack on NATO.
