The Biden administration has received stern warnings from US diplomats working in the Arab world, CNN reports.
One diplomatic cable, which CNN reporters were able to review, said that the administration’s strong support for Israel’s destructive and deadly military campaign in the Gaza Strip would result in “losing Arab society for a generation.”
US officials have stressed deep concern over the growing anger directed at the United States that erupted shortly after the IDF began operations against Hamas on 7 October. A Wednesday cable from the US Embassy in Oman, reads:
We are losing badly on the messaging battlespace.
According to the telegram, Washington’s active support for Israel is seen as an affirmation of “material and moral responsibility for what Arab countries consider war crimes.”
The telegram from the US embassy in Oman was sent to the White House National Security Council, the CIA and the FBI. The second most senior American official in Muscat drafted it. Although it is just one telegram from one embassy in the region, it serves to reflect alarm at the rising tide of anti-American sentiment sweeping the Middle East, according to CNN.
The other telegram, which CNN reporters were able to see, came from the US embassy in Cairo. It quoted an excerpt from an article published in an Egyptian state-run newspaper, which said that “President Biden has surpassed all previous American presidents in brutality and disregard for the Palestinians.”
