Anti-government protests turn into clashes in Argentina

The mass demonstration against pension cuts took place in Buenos Aires on Thursday. Pensioners were joined by football fans. At least 150 protesters were detained, local media reported citing Argentine Security Minister Patricia Bulrich.

“Today’s events are of unprecedented seriousness. Many of those who came to this march are ultras, leftist groups, members of the Kirchneristas (one of the political movements, named after the country’s presidents and spouses Nestor and Cristina Kirchner) associations, various people who have united politically to overthrow the government,” the minister said.

About 1,000 law enforcement officers were involved in calming the demonstrators. The protesters burned a police car and several rubbish bins. Law enforcers used tear gas. Bulrich stated that the protesters wanted to seize the congress.

The protests were the largest ones during President Javier Milei’s term in office. Pensioners have been rallying against his policies every Wednesday, but now they have been joined by football fans. Authorities have warned that fans who riot will be prosecuted.
