US technology corporation Apple has followed Google in changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in its maps for users in the US, following an executive order from President Donald Trump.
The executive order, signed back on January 20, changed a number of place names, but Google Maps and Apple Maps have only now reflected the change.
Mexico has already issued a statement saying that the US has no right to change the name of the gulf. Meanwhile, Wikipedia has refused to recognise the renaming, leaving the new names only in footnotes.
Since Trump’s victory in November, tech executives such as Apple CEO Tim Cook and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai have appeared with him at various events, including the inauguration. Many users have already reacted negatively to Google’s decision, saying that the search giant has caved in before the new administration.
Meanwhile, the Associated Press news agency was not allowed into the Oval Office of the White House for refusing to use the name “America’s Gulf” introduced by Trump. The agency says its reporter was kept out of the event in an attempt to “punish” him for using the name Gulf of Mexico.
On January 21, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order launching the procedure to officially rename the Gulf of Mexico to the American Gulf and North America’s highest mountain, Denali, to Mount McKinley.
