Argentina floods kill at least 10 in Bahía Blanca

Severe flooding in the Argentine port city of Bahía Blanca has left at least 10 people dead. Authorities warn that the number could rise.

Heavy rain hit the city on Friday (7 March), with more than 260 millimetres falling in just a few hours. The downpour destroyed bridges and caused roads to collapse.

Local authorities stated on X that teams from the municipality, provincial government, navy, and army were providing assistance.

The storm forced evacuations from homes and medical centres. Social media images showed mothers carrying newborn babies to safety after a hospital flooded.

Security Minister Patricia Bullrich and Defence Minister Luis Petri visited the city. They shared images of military trucks moving through flooded streets at night.

President Javier Milei cancelled his planned activities in Mendoza province on Saturday. His spokesperson, Manuel Adorni, did not confirm if Milei would visit Bahía Blanca.

Economy Minister Luis Caputo announced on X that the government had allocated 10 billion pesos (£9 million) in aid. The city, home to 300,000 people, suffered severe damage.
