The Armenian parliament has ratified the Rome Statute on Tuesday, bringing it under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Speaker of the National Assembly Alen Simonyan announced that 60 lawmakers voted in favour of joining the international mechanism with 20 voting against it.
60 deputies voted in favour of ratification, 20 opposed. The decision has been made.
In March, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin, accusing him of illegally deporting hundreds of children from Ukraine. The Kremlin denied the charge.
Moscow called Yerevan’s decision “absolutely unacceptable,” referring to Armenia joining the ICC and supporting Putin’s arrest warrant.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said it had previously warned Armenia of “extremely negative consequences” of such a move for relations between the two countries.
The Rome Statute, adopted in 1998 in the Italian capital, asserts the jurisdiction of the ICC in signatory countries.
