A dangerous new phase in the shadow war between Washington and Tehran erupted into the open on Tuesday, as the United States launched a massive wave of airstrikes against Iranian military infrastructure in the Strait of Hormuz, only to face a swift and expansive missile counterattack on its regional allies. The sudden escalation, triggered by attacks on commercial shipping, has shattered a fragile truce and pushed the oil-rich Gulf region to the brink of a broader conflict.
America’s opening salvo
The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed it had struck more than 80 targets inside Iranian territory in what it described as a necessary response to aggressions against three commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global energy supplies. Washington squarely blamed Tehran for the maritime attacks.
According to military officials, the operation utilised both US Air Force warplanes and carrier-based naval aviation. The barrage targeted over 60 fast-attack craft belonging to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), alongside air defence batteries, radar installations, command centres, and anti-ship missile infrastructure.
Explosions and condemnation
Iranian state media acknowledged the strikes, reporting at least six explosions on Qeshm Island and several more in the southern port city of Sirik. While the full extent of the casualties remained unclear, state-run Press TV reported that a number of people were wounded in the assault.
Tehran’s response was swift and furious. The Iranian Foreign Ministry issued a scathing statement, accusing Washington of a flagrant violation of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding — an agreement forged to maintain a previous ceasefire. The ministry also pointed to the reimposition of crushing American oil sanctions as part of a coordinated campaign of pressure, vowing that the republic would take “any measures” necessary to defend its national interests and security.
The empire strikes back
It did not take long for that vow to materialise. Within hours, the IRGC announced it had retaliated by launching a salvo of missiles and drones against 85 American military targets located in Bahrain and Kuwait. The barrage triggered air raid sirens across both Gulf nations, with local air defence systems scrambling to intercept the incoming projectiles. The US sources have yet to confirm the full scale of the damage or any casualties from this retaliatory wave.
A ceasefire torn asunder
This violent exchange marks a catastrophic unravelling of the recently brokered ceasefire agreements, plunging the region back into a state of deep uncertainty. The situation was further inflamed by Washington’s decision to cancel a temporary waiver that had allowed for the limited export of Iranian crude oil, tightening the economic noose around the Islamic Republic.
As military actions intensify, global anxieties are soaring over the immediate safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s oil supply passes.
