At least 46 killed in Sudanese military plane crash

An aircraft that took off from Wadi Seidna Air Base crashed in a densely populated area of Omdurman city, destroying several houses on Wednesday, killing at least 46 people.

According to preliminary reports, the cause of the crash was a technical fault. The aircraft belonged to the Sudanese army. It went down a few minutes after taking off from Wadi Seidna Air Base in Khartoum. While still in the air, the rear of the aircraft caught fire.

Sudanese military and civilians were on board. Among them was the former commander of Khartoum’s military district, Bahar Ahmed. Five of the injured, including two children, have been hospitalised. Rescuers are continuing to remove the rubble.

Sudan’s Health Ministry said that some of the bodies were transferred to Nau Hospital in Omdurman.

The situation in Sudan escalated in April 2023. There is fighting there between the Rapid Reaction Force and the regular army. International experts warn that the escalation of hostilities could lead to a humanitarian crisis.
