At least 9 dead as winter storms batter US

Winter storm caused flooding in a number of southern and eastern US states, at least ten people became victims of the elements. Nine people died in Kentucky, another person died in Georgia, the Governor of the state Andy Beshear said on Monday.

Search and rescue efforts are continuing in several areas. According to Beshear, more than 1,000 rescue operations have been carried out in the last 24 hours. The governor called the storm “one of the worst in Kentucky in a decade.”

Numerous homes, roads and cars flooded in Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia.

In addition, the storm caused power outages. So, according to the latest data, in Pennsylvania without electricity remains more than 78 thousand households, in Maryland – about 65 thousand, in Virginia – more than 62 thousand, in Alabama – about 18 thousand, in Kentucky – more than 16 thousand.

According to the head of the state, more than 1000 rescue operations have been carried out since the beginning of the storm and the situation may worsen due to strong winds.

The unfavourable weather conditions are expected to last for several more days. Meteorologists are warning of the risk of flooding.

Earlier, the Governor of Kentucky declared a state of emergency in the state because of the storm.
