At least five dead in Spanish coal mine accident

Five people were killed and four others were seriously injured in an explosion at a coal mine in the southwest of Spain’s autonomous community of Asturias on Monday, EFE news agency reported, citing the Asturian Emergency Service and the Guardia Civil.

The injured were taken to hospitals, including by helicopter. One person is also known to still be in the mine at a depth of several metres. Two other workers managed to escape unharmed.

A mine rescue team, the fire service and a canine unit of the Civil Guard are working at the scene. The rescue operation continues. According to preliminary information, a machine exploded on the third level of the mine.

The government delegation of Asturias said on social network X that it was monitoring the situation, emphasising that the Asturian Fire Brigade, the Junos Mountain Rescue Brigade and the Civil Guard were already deployed in the area.
