Athens taxi drivers launch 48-hour strike, demand government reforms

The Attica Taxi Drivers’ Union (SATA) has announced a 48-hour strike in Athens in protest against regulatory and economic issues. The strike began at 6 a.m. on Wednesday and will end at 6 a.m. on Friday.

The union criticised Greek Deputy Transport Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis for refusing to participate in substantive negotiations, citing unresolved complaints related to ride-hailing apps and the lack of a clear legal framework regulating private car hire.

SATA claims that some mobile platforms used by both licensed taxis and private vehicles with drivers operate outside the tax system, shifting the financial burden onto licensed professionals and transferring revenues abroad.

The union is calling for a clear legal distinction between licensed taxi services, which are allowed to provide point-to-point urban transport, and private vehicles, which it believes should be limited to time-based hire services with a driver.

Other demands include the proper implementation of a digital platform for managing private hire contracts, the creation of a national register for hire with driver services, increased control over unlicensed operators, and the adjustment of fares in line with the recent increase in the minimum wage.
