Australia, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, and UK oppose Israeli plan to occupy Gaza City

Foreign ministers from Australia, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom have strongly opposed Israel’s recent announcement to occupy Gaza City.

In a joint statement on Friday, they warned that the military operation would worsen the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. It could also endanger hostages and increase the displacement of civilians.

The ministers raised concerns about potential breaches of international humanitarian law. They stressed that any annexation or settlement expansion violates international law.

They called for an immediate and lasting ceasefire. This would allow large-scale humanitarian aid to reach Gaza without obstruction. The statement highlighted the severe risk of famine in the region.

Support for a two-state solution amid rising tensions

The foreign ministers reaffirmed their support for a negotiated two-state solution. They stressed the need to fully demilitarise Hamas and exclude the group from governing Gaza.

Earlier on Friday, Israel’s Security Cabinet approved Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plan to take full control of Gaza City.

Israel has faced widespread criticism for its military campaign in Gaza. More than 61,000 people have died since October 2023. The conflict has caused massive destruction and pushed Gaza close to famine.

In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant. They face charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its actions in the region.
