The Austrian ambassador to the European Union has resigned after reports that he had been writing an anonymous blog with explicit sexual content for several years, the Austrian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.
Thomas Oberreiter, 59, had been Austria’s permanent representative to the EU in Brussels since 2023. He did not respond to requests for comment. According to the ministry, when Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger was informed of the allegations on Saturday, the situation was thoroughly investigated. The details of the allegations have not been disclosed.
“On Monday, the ambassador requested to resign for personal reasons. Minister Meinl-Reisinger granted his request,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The ministry added that it could not disclose further information for reasons of confidentiality and data protection, and that the statement should not be seen as confirmation of the allegations.
Austrian media reported that Oberreiter allegedly ran a blog featuring explicit texts combining elements of fantasy with real photographs. According to the publication Der Standard, the blog has been in existence since 2015, and Oberreiter himself rejects the “alleged accusations.”
